Prakash Utsav of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji takes place on the 15th day (New Moon) of Bhadon, the sixth month of the Punjabi calendar, which occurs in August or September in the Western calendar.
This day commemorates the first parkash of the Guru Granth Sahib at the newly built Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, in 1604.This year Prakash Utsav is on September 16, 2023.
Guru Granth Sahibalso known as Adi Granth or Adi Guru Darbar is not any other holy book or scripture for the Sikhs; but a perpetual, ultimate and eternal Guru.
The original Adi Granth, containing verses by the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and other Sikh Gurus and saints, was compiled by the fifth Sikh Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
In 1604, Guru Arjan Dev completed the work of "Guru Granth Sahib" and it was first installed in Harmandir Sahib. He appointed Baba Buddhaji as the first Granthi of Harmandir Sahib.
This holy compilation comprises of hymns and prayers which contains the actual teachings of Sikh Gurus. Also famed as Adi Granth, whose contents are referred to as Gurbani and the individual hymn is called Shabad.
The first parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was done at Sri Harmandir Sahib in 1604 with Guru Arjan Dev Ji sitting on the floor as Baba Buddha Ji read the Hukamnama. The hukamanma was "Santa Ke Karaj Aap Khaloiya Har Kam Karavan Aaya Raam"
Guru Granth Sahib was complied at Takht Shri Damdama Sahib.It has 1430 pages and 31 raags.
